Skype is a
powerful tool that can be used to create authentic and motivating learning
experiences for students. Skype is a free application that allows you to call
people from all over the world using the Internet. When you contact another
person that uses Skype, you can talk or chat for free.

I never thought about using Skype in the classroom until a few years ago. One of my students was diagnosed with leukemia and was out for a long time for treatments. Towards the end of the year we were able to Skype with him to check in, to show our support, and let him know we missed him. Over following years I understand that he Skyped into some of his classes when he was feeling up to it.
